Purpl’s 1st birthday! How a Discount Platform Became Something So Much Bigger

A year ago, we launched something radical. Not because it was flashy or high-tech or even wildly new. But because it was built for a community that had been left out of the conversation for far too long.

On 9th July 2024, Purpl went live. A discount platform designed by disabled people, for disabled people. It started with a simple mission: to make life a little more affordable, a little more joyful, and a lot more fair.

We didn’t know if anyone would show up.

But you did. In your thousands.

Where it Started…

From our very first brand partners — The Somerset Toiletry Company, Menkind, Hoover, Poundland, Pavers, Secret Sales, LOOKFANTASTIC, Ocado — to the very first person who messaged us to say, “This is the first time I’ve been able to afford a treat this month.” Every single milestone we’ve hit has been because of you.

Now, a year on, the numbers are big — 70,000+ members, over 336 brand partners, over £1 million spent through Purpl, over £300,000 saved by our members. But numbers don’t tell the full story.

It’s in the little things.

Our Community, Our People

Like the comment from someone who used our Morrisons discount to finally buy their weekly shop without stressing. Or our member, Marsaili Eilidh Heatley, who got to go to Henley Regatta for the first time and said Purpl helped them afford the dress they wore. Or the TikTok comment that simply said: “I thought I was the only one who felt like this.”

We’ve cried reading your messages. We’ve laughed at the bingo cards. We’ve chased down missing codes and celebrated every new partner who saw the value in our community. And while we’ve won awards (thank you Rakuten and the Business Disability Forum), and been featured on the BBC and Channel 5, the real win has been the way you’ve shown up — for us and each other.

One member, Steph Dean, told us: “Purpl means I can afford to do more in my life and have the things I need. It’s amazing to feel a part of this community, rather than feeling alone.”

Another simply wrote: “Only we know what it’s like to be disabled. Thanks for getting it.”

“Being a part of the Purpl community means I’ve been able to access things that may have previously affected my monthly budget.” – Sara Stacey

“Being a member means that I’m able to afford my aids and enjoy days out here and there.” – Steph Kirk

“Getting out and being able to go and visit places such as the Botanical Gardens in Bath. Being part of this community had enabled me to live, fight back and feel that I am not alone.” – David Cherriman

So, What Now?

Well, this isn’t the end of a chapter. It’s the start of an even bigger one. More brands. More features. More real, accessible content. And always — always — community first.

“This community has grown far beyond anything I ever imagined. I started Purpl because I knew what it felt like to be excluded from things that should be simple — saving money, finding help, being seen. A year on, I’ve watched our members not just save hundreds of pounds, but feel part of something powerful. This is just the beginning, and I’m so proud to be building it together.” — Georgina, Founder of Purpl

To everyone who joined, shared, saved, spent, tagged, messaged, or told a friend — thank you.

We’re one. But we’re just getting started.
